As Salaam Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,
Have you ever wondered why some people comment on blogs and it leaves a nice personalised avatar next to their comment and for others there is an ugly (or pretty) pattern? It’s all down to Gravatars or ‘globally recognized avatars’.
How do gravatars work?
They work by assigning an image to an email address, which is called and displayed when the email address is used when commenting on a blog that has been setup to use gravatars (almost all WordPress blogs including MyIslamicFamily ).
What so cool about gravatars?
With gravatars you don’t need to upload an avatar for each site you use. You can change your avatar for every site that you have ever commented on with a single action.
How do you setup a gravatar?
- Follow this link: http://en.gravatar.com/site/signup and enter your email address in the box provided.
- Check your email, open the ‘Welcome to Gravatar’ email and click the activation link.
- Enter a username and password, then click ‘Signup’. Make sure you check the username availability and make your password secure or it will give you an error and you’ll have to try again.
- You don’t have any images yet, so click on the big ‘Add one by clicking here!’ link.
- You are given four options to upload an image and can choose which ever you like, but we are going to click ‘My computer’s hard drive’ to get an image that is already save on our computer.
- Click ‘browse’, find your image, double click it and then click ‘Next’.
- Then you will see you image, use the box to crop the image to your liking and then click ‘Crop and Finish!’.
- Finally, you must select a rating for your image. Hopefully, you’ve added a family friendly image and you can click the ‘G’ rating.
- Your finished, if you have been using that email address to add comments to blogs visit one of them to see your avatar in all its glory. If you haven’t used that email address to add comments, add one here to check out the wonders of the gravatar.
Has this helped you to set up your gravatar? Should I include images of the signup and setup processes?
